SMOKE ABATEMENT.
Observations have been kept on chimneys of the various
factories in the District, and only on one occasion was black smoke
found to be emitted to any extent. A warning letter was sent, and
we have had no cause to complain since that date.
As I have previously stated, there are very few large factories
in the District, and it is the private houses which are the greatest
delinquents in the matter of the emission of smoke.
Although the use of gas fires and cookers has increased within
the last few years, there is still the open fireplace to be dealt with,
and the remedy for domestic smoke appears to be in the direction
of a reliable smokeless fuel. From time to time, we read of schemes
for combating the smoke nuisance, but until some authoritative
smokeless fuel is produced at a cost within the reach of the average
householder, or until some improvement can be effected in the
