DENTAL SERVICE
There has been a constant improvement in the work of the Priority Dental Service and the School
Dental Service over the last 5 years, but there is an urgent need for further expansion.
The School Dental Service is responsible for inspecting and treating children who attend the
maintained schools within the Borough. Children should be inspected and treated at intervals not exceding
one year, and, preferably, every six months.
In 1949, owing to shortage of accommodation and difficulty in recruiting Dental Officers,
only 33 per cent. of the total school population was inspected and offered treatment, so that children were
being inspected only once in three years and their treatment was spasmodic and irregular and so not fully
effective.
