Certificates are held by 355 food traders, about 31 per cent, of those eligible. 328 qualify, but have not applied for a certificate. Improvements in Premises
During the year the contraventions of the Food and Drugs Act, 1938, and Food Handling Byelaws,
discovered in the major surveys of 1950 and 1951 have been remidied with the exception of the provision of
constant hot water supplies in some cases. One trader who failed to provide adequate means for heating
water was summoned and fined £1 with one guinea costs. In 1953, an additional 65 traders were encouraged
to provide constant hot water but 44 premises still have an unsatisfactory supply. In all other cases traders
complied with requests or notices, and legal action was not necessary.
