district, and, if not, what are the existing arrangements for inspection of meat at the time of slaughter;
action under Section 117 of the Public Health Act, 1875, or Section 47 of the Public Health (London)
Act, 1891 ; number of carcases and parts of carcases condemned for tuberculosis.
The past year has been somewhat remarkable in respect of the large quantities of damaged
and unsound foodstuffs voluntarily surrendered by the various shopkeepers in the district, particulars
of which are given in this report under the heading "Sanitary Inspection of District."
Bakehouses.—There are 64 occupied bakehouses in the district, 46 above ground and
18 underground. These are all visited twice a year, and in 18 instances notices were served on the
occupiers to conform with the regulations under the Factory and Workshop Act.
Slaughterhouses.—There are nine Slaughterhouses in the district, five being licensed and
four registered. One of the licensed premises is used only for the killing of horses. Frequent visits
are paid by the inspectors during the time that slaughtering is in operation for the purpose of examining
carcases and internal organs of the slaughtered animals.
In one instance a bullock, after being killed, was found on examination to be badly affected
with generalised tuberculosis. The inspector at once communicated with the official allocator of
the district, who consented voluntarily to surrender the carcase.
The carcase was later on forwarded to a firm of fat extractors for rendering into fat for soap
making.
In 10 instances bullocks' livers were found to be diseased. These were all destroyed as unfit
for food.
A public abattoir has not been established in the district.
(c) Sale of Food and Drugs Acts—A report on the work done by the local authority under these
Acts should be included, with observations on special questions which have received or require attention.
The administration of these Acts is in the hands of the Middlesex County Council, and the
following Table, No. 20, shewing the work done in Willesden, has been kindly supplied me by Mr.
Robinson, Chief of the Weights and Measures Staff.
