Early in the year the Council had under consideration a special report submitted by the
Medical Officer of Health, shewing the estimated relative costs of the collection and disposal of house
refuse in Willesden by (a) collecting the refuse from a portion of the district only by Electric Vehicles,
(b) collecting the refuse from the whole of the district by Electric Vehicles, and (c) collecting the
refuse from the whole of the district by Horse-drawn Vehicles.
The Council decided:—
(1) To collect house refuse from that part of the district known as the South Kilburn
area, containing 3,924 houses, by Electric Vehicles.
(2) To enter into a contract for the barging away of house refuse at a sum of 5s. 6d. per
ton, the contractor to provide a shoot.
(3) To hire a Wharf at Harrow Road from the Grand Junction Canal Co. at a rental
of £75 per annum.
Three Electric Vehicles were accordingly purchased from Messrs. Ransome, Sims & Jefferies,
of Ipswich, at a cost of £1,151 each, and work commenced on the 1st November, 1919.
During the months of November and December the three vehicles were found to be satisfactory
and capable of doing the work required of them. The experience gained in this short period
is not sufficient to enable reliable or comparative figures to be presented at this stage.
The Council, after further consideration, decided that dust collection from the whole of the
Willesden district be undertaken by direct labour, and with Electric Vehicles, as from the 1st April,
1920.
Eleven additional vehicles were accordingly ordered from Messrs. Ransome Sims & Jefferies.
As from April 1st, 1920, the work of House Refuse collection will be under the supervision of
the Surveyor to the Council.
