Total | 34 | 44 | 24 | 7 | 109 | 587 | 696 |
The total number referred from the Clinics for Convalescent treatment is 587. This includes
women, children under 5 and children from 5 to 14. As the attendances at the Clinics are practically
equal for women and children under 5 and children from 5 to 14 it may be assumed that 293 of these
cases were women and children under 5. The number of women and children under 5, therefore,
coming under observation at the Hospital and the Clinics may be estimated as follows:—
Hospital 78
Clinics 293
Total 371 in 32 weeks;
Or in the same proportion 603 in 52 weeks.
With regard to Hospital cases, it should be observed that the number given is a minimum,
as many cases were kept longer in Hospital than otherwise they would have been, had a Convalescent
Home been available for the more rapid recovery of these cases in the later convalescent stages of
the illness. It will also be observed that approximately 43 per cent. of the cases are Influenza cases,
and these are not likely to recur annually, but as against this it is to be noted that no Infectious
Diseases appear on the list, such as Measles, Whooping Cough, Diphtheria and Scarlet Fever, many
of which require prolonged convalescence for complications after the infection of the original disease
has subsided. The figure therefore of 603 cases per annum may be taken as a fair estimate of the
number of cases passing through the hands of the Medical Staff of the Authority requiring convalescent
treatment. A Convalescent Home of 50 beds, each bed being occupied for 4 weeks, would
be able to deal with 650 cases per annum.
PROPERTIES.
The following is a list of properties within 30 miles of Willesden, which may prove suitable
for conversion into a Convalescent Home of approximately 50 beds:—
