In all instances the premises were found to be kept in
a clean condition, and in no case was it found necessary to
serve notice in respect of contravention of the Bye-laws.
Milkshops.—Twenty additional persons were registered
as purveyors of milk during the year 1914, making a total
of 144 on the register. In all instances the premises where
milk is sold were visited twice, and in some cases three times
during the year. Generally, they were found to be kept and
conducted under cleanly conditions; but in a few cases the
provision made for the washing and cleansing of utensils,
cans, etc., was unsatisfactory. Thirty-four notices to
remedy insanitary conditions—principally defective paving—
existing in connection with milkshops were served. Of this
number 28 have been complied with, and the remaining six
were outstanding at the end of the year.
Bakehouses.—There are 47 bakehouses above ground
and 21 underground. These were all visited twice, and with
the exception of a few minor defects were found in a satisfactory
condition. No structural alterations or improvements
were effected during the year. Forty-seven notices
were served, principally in respect of whitewashing and
cleansing of the bakehouses. These were duly complied
with. In the case of underground bakehouses, whitewashing
is required more frequently than in those above ground.
