Glands enlarged from septic conditions return to their
normal size when the source of irritation is removed. The
urgent need for a Dental Clinic to deal with the numerous
cases of dental caries is thus apparent.
Previous Illness History.—The following Table,
No. 78, shews the diseases from which children had suffered
when enquiries were made at the time of Medical Inspection.—
Table No. 78.

The above Table, No. 78, shews that 63 per cent. of
children had had Measles when they were examined as
entrants, and 90 per cent. when examined as leavers; that is
to say that 27 per cent. contracted the disease during schoollife,
as against 63 per cent. before admission to school.
Similarly it may be stated that 16.4 per cent. of children
contracted Whooping Cough during school-life, as compared
with 44.9 per cent. before attendance at school.
Measles and Whooping Cough are specially fatal in children
under five, and these facts shew not only that school is a
less potent factor in their spread than is generally supposed,
but also the necessity of dealing with these diseases in
young children under school age.
