A distinction has to be drawn between the number of
notifications received and the actual number of persons
affected with tuberculosis. Tuberculosis differs from the
other notifiable diseases in the fact that it is in most cases
essentially chronic, and so the liability to multiple notification
of any case is increased. It will also be apparent
from the above Table that certain cases may be notified
four limes at least, by the medical practitioner, by the school
medical inspector, and by the superintendent of a poor law
institution or a sanatorium on two occasions. In addition
it may be notified by more than one private practitioner.
During the year the actual number of persons notified as
suffering with tuberculosis was 514, the percentage of multiple
notifications being 41.18.
The follow ing Table, No. 53, shews the number of notifications
and the number of new cases each year since 1909.
