NON-NOTIFIABLE INFECTIOUS DISEASES INTIMATED
FROM THE SCHOOLS.
The following table shows the number of cases of non-notifiable
infectious disease of which no knowledge would have been obtained
and no public measures taken to control their spread, but for the
notifications sent by the teachers.
The attendance at school of these cases has been regulated in
accordance with the nature of the ailments from which the scholars
or their home-contacts suffered; as a result of visits paid to the homes
the parents in many instances have been induced to call in medical
aid where it was required, the hygienic steps necessary to protect
others have been pointed out, and in many instances insisted upon.
The treatment of a certain number of cases has been undertaken where
circumstances have warranted it, and altogether a large amount of
suffering and disability has been relieved and in considerable degree
prevented. The administrative details of carrying out this work have
occupied a large and prominent place in each day's duties. No change
in procedure has taken place during the year, although in several
directions it had become evident that improvements might be effected.
The Education Committee, however, having regard to the wider
changes that will be necessitated in carrying out the requirements
of the Education (Administrative Provisions) Act deferred consideration
of the purposed amendments of procedure until the Act should
come into operation.
