SMOKE NUISANCES.
Smoke nuisances, which were such a source of trouble a few years
ago, have been the occasion of very few complaints during 1907. On
no occasion in the course of the systematic observations kept by the
Inspectors was any nuisance observed.
A nuisance of another character, however, arose in connection with
a Carpet Beating Works situated at Lower Place. Several complaints
were received in respect of these Works, and observations made at the
time resulted in considerable collections of gritty and floeculent deposits
being secured. The nuisance was abated upon the representation of
the Council without litigation being necessary.
HOUSING OF THE WORKING CLASSES ACT, 1890.
During the year three premises were dealt with under the above
Act—Nos. 16 and 18, Dudding Hill Lane.
On the 18th December, 1906, representation was made to the
Council as to the untenantable condition of these premises, and in
accordance with instructions notices were served upon the owners to
put thein in a proper habitable condition. As the property was old,
and the dilapidations extensive, the expense of so doing would have
been more than the houses were worth, and the owners therefore decided
to pull the premises down. Ultimately the houses were demolished.
