Of the inquests into the causes of death from
accidents, 10 were due to suffocation in bed. This
"accident" means nothing less than culpable negligence,
and it is regretable that in this country, as in
others, it is not a penal offence for mothers to have
their infants sleeping in the same bed with them. Of
the other accidents 5 were ascribed to falls, 2 to
poisoning by gas, 1 to drowning, 3 to being run over
by passing train, and 4 otherwise.
