It is pleasing to report that the incidence of infectious disease shews a
general decrease from last year.
The three cases of food poisoning resident in this district were not connected
although the causative organism, salmonella typhimurium, was the same. Two of
the cases, although soon clear of the main symptoms, were a long time under medical
attention before being declared free from infection.
Complaint was made by a person residing outside the district who suspected
that he had food poisoning following a meal at a local cafe. However the
complaint was not made until after three days had passed, and the complainant
himself had not called in a doctor. Specimens obtained from the cafe and staff
all proved negative. This was only a minor incident but it does point to the
necessity for immediate and urgent action if any beneficial results are to be
obtained in preventing the spread of food poisoning.
Poliomyelitis is absent from the list this year, and with increased supplies
