HOUSING.
Work continued in connection with the St. Albans Road/Alston Road Clearance
Order: by the end of the year twenty-three out of a total of twenty-eight houses
had been demolished, private development of the site proceeding at the same time.
Twelve Demolition Orders were made during the year, two of the houses
concerned being previously the subject of Closing Orders. Five houses were
pulled down under Demolition Orders made previously.
One Closing Order was sealed, it being inadvisable to pursue demolition yet
owing to adjacent premises.
One house was made fit for habitation by the owner, following approval by the
Council of proposed works and extension of time under a Demolition Older.
Nineteen houses were made fit by the respective owners as a result of formal
action, in addition to which the Council carried out repairs to one house in
default. In this latter case a Charging Order was made, requiring the tenant to
pay his rent to the Council, but the owner later paid the account in full.
Minor defects were dealt with by the application of the Public Health Act.
In one instance the Council acted in default to provide a new water closet flushing
cistern.
The introduction of the Rent Act 1957, has not made any great demands upon the
services of the Department. Apart from enquiries the following is a brief
summary of certificates etc., issued.
