needs. It will be equally obvious that a reduction in the number
of cases of tuberculosis, brought about by the removal of conditions
which predispose to the spread of infection and disease, represents
a much more acceptable and logical programme.
Arrangements have been made whereby Southgate schools will
take part in the Clinical Trials in respect of B.C.G. vaccine,
. sponsored by the Medical Research Council. The parents of school
leavers in our Secondary Modern schools will be invited to have
their children tested and where the tests indicate that protection
is required, vaccinated with B.C.G. or similar vaccine. This scheme
will not start until 1951 and does not therefore call for more than
brief mention in this Report.
Mass X-ray Unit No. 5B visited Southgate during 1950 for the
specific purpose of dealing with employees of the Eastern Electricity
Board. After consultation with the Mass X-ray Unit, the Public
Health Department communicated with commercial firms in Southgate
and with local organisations, extending an invitation to visit
the Mass X-ray Unit by appointment, and to make use of the
facilities afforded. We have not been supplied with the number
of persons who visited the Mass X-ray Unit during its brief stay in
Southgate, but the facilities made available by the Unit were nonethe-less
highly acceptable. We have now had the pleasure of two
visits from a Mass X-ray Unit within the past three years.
