In an early section of this report I passed comment on the
satisfactory infantile mortality rate for the year, a rate to which
our Maternity and Child Welfare Services must surely have contributed.
This shows us what can and should be done; it also points
the way to greater achievements. Unfortunately, present-day
conditions are not on our side; even to hold what we already have
calls for sustained, strenuous effort. In no field of social medicine
will the effort be more worth-while and show a greater yield. The
future lies with youth, but whether or not there is a future at all
depends not on youth but on us.
