SANITARY INSPECTION OF AREA.
The various tables set out in the following pages detail the
work of sanitary inspection carried out within the Borough during
1936. These tables are of no little interest, and from them several
important facts emerge. The housing inspections have risen by
almost 1,000, very largely due to the additional work entailed under
the Housing Act, 1936. As previously indicated, visits to slaughterhouses
have increased by more than 400. Factory and workshops
visits have decreased by slightly more than 200, in itself an
eminently satisfactory feature when it is remembered that the
decrease is due to the absence of re-visits necessitated in former years
by the continued lack of cleanliness. Finally, visits paid in connection
with infectious diseases have risen by no fewer than 1,400.
This latter rise is due, partly to the more frequent visits paid by
the Health Visitor following information received regarding notifiable
and non-notifiable infectious diseases, and partly to the very
large number of measles cases which occurred within the Borough
during the winter and spring of last year. The total number of
inspections carried out during the year has risen by more than
3,000. This need not be taken to imply that the district requires
more inspection by reason of depreciation and other undesirable
elements, the increased total being explainable upon the grounds
already stated.
This is quite a satisfactory feature of the sanitary work, and illustrates the fact that, by tactful and persuasive means, it is possible to achieve results without having recourse to more stringent, coercive methods.
