extension, but, with the rapid growth of the district, it is unlikely
that this extension can be indefinitely postponed, unless some alteration
in the hours or system of working is instituted.
Minor complaints continue to be received and are dealt with
by the Surveyor's Department. Not a single complaint was
received during 1936 as to fly or cricket nuisance around the
destructor, or, for that matter, in any other portion of the district.
This is extremely satisfactory, but may be attributed, in great part
at least, to the inclement weather experienced during the summer
of 1936. Arrangements are still ready to cope at short notice with
any recurrence of the cricket nuisance which marked the summer
and autumn of the previous year.

Smoke Abatement.— The following is a summary of the work
carried out during 1936 under the Smoke Abatement Act, 1926 :—
One hundred and forty-seven observations were made on
chimneys within the Borough. One contravention of the Bye-law
was noted during the year. Notice of the offetice was served and
the matter reported to the Pubic Health Committee. The offender
was warned.
There are no chimneys in the district connected to exempted
furnaces. Fortnightly observations of all chimneys in the Borough
continue to be made.
Ponds and Rubbish Dumps.— Complaints from these sources
are now showing a rapid decrease as the district becomes more fully
developed. Very few complaints were received during 1936 as to
ponds, but several complaints regarding the improper use of pieces
of waste ground were dealt with. These complaints are not
