Hospital, the possible supply of sterilised maternity outfits, and
suggested co-operation between the Queen's Nursing Association
and the Council regarding the setting up of a rota of home-helps
and a supervised midwives' scheme.
A visit was paid to Southgate during the year by a Ministry
of Health Official, who made a thorough inspection of the Maternity
and Child Welfare services of the district. The subsequent report
from the Ministry expressed satisfaction as to the work performed
and suggested several minor additions to the scheme, these having
since been carried out.

The various schools in the district were inspected throughout
the year for the presence of any sanitary defects. In addition,
any doubtful cases of infectious disease met with by the Assistant
County School Medical Officer during routine inspections were
reported to the Public Health Department with a note as to the
conditions found. Extending this most desirable spirit of cooperation,
several schools in which localised outbreaks of infectious
disease occurred were visited in company with the Assistant School
Medical Officer, and classes of children examined for possible
"carriers" or missed cases. Finally, as reported elsewhere, arrangements
have been made with the Middlesex County Education
Authority whereby immunisation against diphtheria can be carried
out at any school in the district. By these means the singular
position in which Southgate is placed by virtue of the fact that
school medical inspections are not performed by its own officers is
to a certain degree mitigated.
