Road, but this scheme had to be abandoned. In place of this, a new
Centre is contemplated for the Council's Housing Estate in Southgate.
There can be little doubt that such a Centre would prove a
valuable addition to the Maternity and Child Welfare services of
the district.
As previously mentioned, laboratory work was begun at the
Council's laboratory situated at the Isolation Hospital on April
11th, 1934. The work is carried out by the Medical Officer of
Health assisted by Mr. Hill, Sanitary Inspector, and by Dr. Burns
acting as Deputy for the Medical Officer of Health. The facilities
afforded have proved of inestimable service in expediting the results
of bacteriological examinations, while a considerable saving has
been effected in the total costs. Practitioners in the district also
make use of the laboratory for examination of pathological
specimens, etc., and every encouragement is given them to do so.
Apart from the examination of swabs and sputa, samples of milk
are regularly examined for total bacterial counts, presence of b.
coli and b. tuberculosis. This work has proved illuminative and
the results are being submitted to the Milk Marketing Board at
monthly intervals. A modern electrically-driven centrifuge was
obtained to assist in this work.
Other specimens are sent to the Clinical Research Association
or to the laboratory of the Prince of Wales's Hospital for examination,
and animal virulence tests are also performed when required
by these two bodies.
The report of the year's work in this connection is as
follows—
