Stillbirths
The number of stillbirths registered was 9, equal to a rate of 17.00 per
1,000 total births, compared with 31.93 for 1954.
Deaths
The deaths registered totalled 261, equal to a crude death rate for the year
of 10.24 per 1,000 Home population, compared with 10.37 in 1954.
The area comparability factor calculated by the Registrar General for the
purpose of securing comparability between local death rates is 0.93. This makes
the Adjusted Death Rate 9.64, the same rate as for 1954.
The Death Rate for England and Wales was 11.7.
Deaths among the inmates of an Institution for elderly men numbered 14.
A large proportion of the deaths were of elderly people, and of the total
deaths 179 or 68.2% were of persons 65 years of age and over, compared with
71.9% the previous year.
Those dying at 75 years of age and over accounted for 45.6% of the total
deaths, compared with 42.4% in 1954.
Cancer
Deaths from cancer numbered 49, giving a death rate per 1,000 Home
population of 1.90 compared with 1.61 in 1954. The rate for England and
Wales was 2.05.
Tuberculosis
The death rate per 1,000 Home population was 0.039 against 0.23 in 1954.
The rate for England and Wales was 0.13.
Maternal Mortality
There were no maternal deaths during the year, compared with a rate of
1.99 per 1,000 (live and still) births for 1954.
The rate for England and Wales was 0.54 compared with 0.69 in 1954.
Infantile Mortality
The number of deaths under one year was 14, corresponding to a rate of
26.92 per 1,000 births, compared with a rate of 26.80 for 1954. The infantile
mortality rate for England and Wales was 24.9. Eleven of the fourteen infants
died under the age of four weeks, six of whom died from congenital malformations
