NATIONAL ASSISTANCE ACT, 1948
It was necessary to take urgent action and obtain a Magistrate's emergency
order for the compulsory removal to hospital of an old lady who was ill and
incapable of looking after herself. Further applications were made to the
Magistrate's Court for her continued detention in hospital and granted.
Under section 50 of the Act, it is the duty of the local authority to arrange
for the burial or cremation of the body of any person who has died in their area
if it appears that no suitable arrangements for the disposal of the body have or
are being made. During the year three bodies were dealt with by the Council
under these provisions.

There were 378 cases of tuberculosis on the Register at the end of the year, compared with 339 in 1953.
