NATIONAL ASSISTANCE ACT, 1948.
Difficulty was experienced in obtaining accommodation in one case
where it was necessary to take urgent action and obtain a Magistrate's order for
removal of an old lady who was ill and incapable of looking after herself. She
was eventually removed to hospital where she died soon after admission, some
four days after her plight had been discovered.
Under Section 50 of the Act, it is the duty of the local authority to arrange
for the burial or cremation of the body of any person who has died in their area
if it appears that no suitable arrangements for the disposal of the body have or
are being made. During the year one body was dealt with by the Council under
these provisions.
