HOUSING.
The erection of 77 flats by the local authority was completed during the
year. Private builders erected 4 dwellinghouses and 6 maisonettes and converted
one house into four flats and one outbuilding into a dwelling.
1. Inspection of Dwellinghouses during the Year:—
(1) (a) Total number of dwellinghouses inspected for housing
defects (under Public Health or Housing Acts) 861
(b) Number of inspections made for the purpose 910
(2) (a) Number of dwellinghouses (included in subhead (1) above)
which were inspected and recorded under the Housing
Consolidated Regulations, 1925 and 1932 4

In both cases the defects were remedied by the Local
Authority in default of the owners.
(b) Proceedings under Section 11 of the Housing Act, 1936 —
One house was demolished.

4. Housing Act, 1936—Overcrowding.
Although progress has again been made in the erection of houses,
maisonettes and flats, there still remains an amount of overcrowding in the
district.
The Housing Manager reports that 122 families living in overcrowded or
unsatisfactory conditions were rehoused during the year.
