UNSOUND FOOD.
As in previous years, fishmongers and others have
brought fish to the Council's depot for opinion as to it
being fit for human food. In this way six trunks of fish
and several boxes of haddocks have been condemned.
A suspected piece of pork was brought to me that had
been purchased the day previous. I considered the same
unfit for human food, and a magistrate's order was obtained
to have it destroyed. The butcher was cautioned.
Renewed Licences for the sale of petrol have been
granted in seven cases, viz.: —
Messrs. Rickett, Cockerell & Co., 10 gallons of naphtha.
W. Verinder, 200 galls, of petrol, 5 galls, benzoline.
There have also been two special licences granted to
the manager of the Crystal Palace for the sale and storage
of petrol spirit during the Automobile Show and Runs.
Six samples of petroleum were obtained from various
shops and tested as to the flash point. The samples were
above the minimum (73 degrees Fahrenheit) prescribed by
the Statute. Three samples were only 3 degrees above
the minimum. This low-flash oil is a positive danger to
the users, especially when used in a lamp with a glass
reservoir. The temperature of many rooms used by the
poorer classes for living and sleeping is often above that
which causes this low-flash oil to give off inflammable
vapour.
