Unemployment.
I am indebted to the Manager of the Local Employment Exchange
for the following information with regard to unemployment in the
area during 1963: —
"Due to prolonged bad weather the number of persons unemployed
during the first three months of 1963 was the highest for many
years. The peak figure was reached in January, with a total of 485
men and 27 women unemployed. Included in this total were 178 men
who were out of work solely because of bad weather.
"Since this period the numbers of unemployed have declined and
• in December the figures showed a reduction of 62 on last year.
"Since March there have been steady demands for skilled and
unskilled men and a constant unsatisfied demand for women in the
factories in the area.
"The percentage of unemployed persons has been consistently
below both the figure for London and South East Region and the
National figure."
