NATURE OF ADULTERATION.
(a) Serial No. 411.
Almond Essence. Some deterioration
presumably with age. Benzoic
acid 0.5%. Not dangerous to health
in amounts used. Inferior.
REMARKS.
No action possible as complainant
was unable to remember the name
and address of retailer.
(b) Serial No. 530.
Bread. 2 slices of bread made into
jam sandwich. On the bottom and
side of the slices of bread were two
patches of material similar in character
to dirty machine grease.
Inferior.
A thorough investigation was made
at the bakery concerned. Arrangements
were made for a more effective
inspection of the machinery.
(c) Serial No. 529.
Milk in sealed pint bottle. Consisted
of an unopened one pint
bottle of milk. Halfway down the
inside of the bottle was a dirty vertical
smear about 2 inches long and
i inch wide. Below the main smear
was a much smaller similar mark.
The material consisted of gritty sand
and dirt firmly adherent to the
inside of the bottle. It was insoluble
in milk and unlikely to be harmful
to health. Though the colour suggested
mould none was detected.
Inferior.
A full enquiry was made of the
dairy company from which it
appeared that this particular bottle
escaped the vigilance of the Company's
Inspector.
(d) Serial No. 432.
Orange Drink. On the side of bottle
and inside was an area of faint dark
staining. Microscopically it consisted
of mould spores. Some of
these innoculated with wort agar
failed to grow in 20 days. The
spores had, therefore, been killed
by the bottle cleansing process. Not
dangerous to health. Inferior.
The mould spores were not alive
and it was obviously one of those
cases where the bottle examiners
employed by the dairy had overlooked
its condition on its travel
between the washing and filling
machines.
