Births.
The birth rate for the year 1958 was 17.9 per 1,000 total population.
The adjusted rate for comparison with other areas being 17.7.
The rate of 17.9 is .1 lower than that for 1957, but is well
above the figure of 16.4 for England and Wales as a whole.
1,319 live births were registered in the Urban District during
the year, as against 1,302 in 1957.
The illegitimate birth rate was 29.0 per 1,000 live and still
births. There were 36 illegitimate live births, 19 being males and
17 females.
Twenty-four stillbirths were registered, giving a rate of 0.33
per 1,000 total population and 17.87 per 1,000 live and still births.
Seven of the stillbirths were males and seventeen females.
Deaths.
747 deaths appertaining to the Urban District were registered
during 1958, giving a Death Rate of 10.1 per 1,000 total population.
The adjusted rate for use when comparing one area with another
is 11.3. The rate for England and Wales as a whole is 11.7.
Of the Orpington deaths registered, 388 were males and 359
females.
