Two samples of water were taken for examination, both of
which proved to be satisfactory.
Verminous Conditions and Uncleanliness.
Two cases of filthy premises and twenty-three of verminous
premises were dealt with, the former by the owners concerned and
the latter by the Department's Disinfector.
Water Supply.
Although the area of the district is 20,842 acres and there are
21,400 dwellings, only 37 premises are situated where a main piped
water supply is not available.
These premises are in isolated parts of the district and are
generally dependent upon rainwater which is collected from roofs
and stored in underground tanks constructed of brick and concrete.
54 owners have not connected their premises to the water main
although it is available in the roads fronting their premises. Some
of these are a considerable distance from the road but there are 16
within 80 feet of the main.
Where a water main is available within a reasonable distance
of these premises, the Public Health department is endeavouring
to obtain the necessary connections thereto. During the year,
31 Statutory Notices were served on the instructions of the Council,
and as a result of formal and informal action, 22 premises
previously without mains water have now a piped supply to their
premises.

The total of 91 premises still dependent upon underground tank or well supply is made up as under:—
