hospital treatment during 1955: 56.
T.B. Care Committee.
I am indebted to the Secretary, Orpington and District Tuberculosis
Care Committee, for the following information: —
During the year the Committee gave assistance to 48 cases, by
means of help with the rent, lighting bills, fare for visiting, coal, furniture,
clothing, groceries, holidays, removals, etc.
At Christmas, arrangements were made for 50 parcels of food
and toys to be distributed, and 11 patients in hospital received parcels.
Typhoid Fever.
A single case of typhoid fever occurred during the year, and as
this was of particular interest, showing as it does the importance of the
carrier in this infection, a full report of the case is given.
The patient, one of the younger members of a large family,
attended a day school in an adjoining district. She had been sent home
from school at the onset of symptoms, was admitted to hospital in
the early stages of the illness, and made a complete recovery.
During the period preceding her illness, the patient's movements
had been confined to the immediate vicinity of her home and school,
and extensive enquiries were therefore made in these two districts to
discover the source of the infection.
At the school the water and milk supplies were sampled and found
to be satisfactory. Although the patient had not consumed school
meals, the canteen arrangements were investigated, and could not be
