Local Authorities which co-operates with the Department of Scientific
and Industrial Research.
Heating Appliances (Fireguards) Act, 1951.
During the course of the year, only two contraventions were found.
At two shops, electric fires fitted with fireguards not complying with
the requirements of the above Act, were withdrawn from sale.

Shops Act, 1950.

The department continues to receive the full co-operation of the shop-keepers in regard to the various matters dealt with by the above Act.

Pet Animals Act, 1951.
Licences in respect of four premises were renewed during 1954,
and twenty-one visits were made by the Sanitary Inspectors. No
nuisances or defects were found. The pets sold from these shops
consist mainly of tropical fish, birds and tortoises.
Rag, Flock and Other Filling Materials Act, 1951.
No contraventions were detected under this Act.
Rodent Control.
The number of treatments carried out by the rodent operatives
averages more than ten per week, and it is satisfying to report that
there are very few complaints received of re-infestation. The majority
of these infestations were found at private premises, particularly where
poultry were kept, and the free service given to these householders is
undoubtedly appreciated.
