The Building Industry has had another good year and the mild
weather of the last quarter enabled outdoor work to continue well
beyond the normal season in the decorating trade and the year finished
with an Unemployed Register smaller than in previous years.
The problem of finding suitable employment of a lasting nature
for the disabled and the elderly worker is receiving constant attention,
and workers in these categories comprise a substantial proportion of
the Register, and local bodies are interesting themselves in the First
Report of the National Advisory Committee on this subject."
LOCAL SICKNESS.
A weekly return is received from the Ministry of National Insurance,
indicating for the area the first certificates of sickness benefit
received at the Local Office.
These figures give some indication of the major trend of general
sickness in the area, but must not be taken as being exact as the area
covered by the Ministry statistics is that of Orpington Postal district
and not that covered by the Urban District boundaries.
