Population.
The Registrar General's estimate of the population of the
Urban District (Civilian and Non-Civilian), mid-year, 1950, is
62,420, which is an increase of 2,920 on the corresponding figure
for 1949, and is equivalent to a density of 3.0 persons per acre.
The excess of births over deaths during the year was equal
to a figure of 264, and is included in the figure of increase
previously stated.
Births.
The Birth Rate for 1950, is 14.8 per 1,000 population, and
shows a slight reduction against the figure of 16.5 for 1949.
There were 925 births registered, of which 468 were males
and 457 females. Of this number 32 were illegitimate.
Illegitimate Births.
The illegitimate birth rate per 1,000 live births for 1950, was
34.6, as against 48 for the year 1949, and is considerably lower
than the average of 45 for the years 1934-1949.
Stillbirths.
The Registrar General's returns for the year show that the
number of stillbirths registered for the area was 21 (after
adjustment for inward and outward transfers), which represents
a stillbirth rate of 22.2 per 1,000 (live and still) births.
