SECTION 29
DOMESTIC HELP.
It was in October, 1946, that the Leyton Council, the then
Maternity and Child* Welfare Authority, extended their scheme
for domestic help by including the provision of domestic help in
necessitous cases other than mothers and infants; and in my last
two annual reports I have dealt at some length with certain
difficulties of administration—the duties of an Area Domestic Help
Organiser, the arguments for and against part-time employment
of helpers, the different types of cases to be helped, how the scheme
is administered and other aspects of the subject.

As the new scheme has now been in operation for four complete years, some idea of the increase in the work may be gathered from these figures:—

YearNumber of Cases

194721127238
194816285247
1949168214382
1950136464600

It will be seen that, whereas there has been no increase—in
fact, a decrease since 1949—in the annual number of maternity
cases, the number of cases other than maternity has been increasing
greatly each year.
