A further step forward was achieved when, early in the
year, the Council adopted a 10 year programme to cover the
whole of the Urban District with Smoke Control Areas. The
estimated cost of this programme to the Council will be
equivalent to slightly more than 1d. rate for each year of
its 10 years duration.
The District has been divided into 43 Smoke Control
Areas and in accordance with the method of introduction
already agreed the first few areas were intended to cover
the undeveloped and sparsely populated parts of the district
in order to ensure that these areas would remain non-producers
of smoke. The table below shows that there were not
many houses in the first six areas dealt with. All other
areas however will contain between 500 and 1,000 houses.
By the end of the year six Smoke Control Areas had been declared the the following progress achieved:
