Investigations were carried out by the public health inspectors at all these premises where fires
occurred and owners advised upon the requirements necessary when reinstating the premises to
provide adequate means of escape in case of fire as well as the necessary amenities if the house was
to be re-let in multiple occupation. The Department regrets that the extent of multiple occupation of
houses within the Borough, the limit on the number of public health inspectors available for this work
and the complexity of the task in each individual case must continue to result in a high percentage
of houses in multiple occupation still awaiting detailed inspection and assessment.
91 visits were made to houses where the Council were contemplating mortgage advances and
where more than one household were intending to occupy the premises, and reports upon facilities
and in appropriate cases upon work required to provide an adequate means of escape in case of fire
were provided for the use of the Borough Treasurer and the Chief Valuation Officer so that conditions
of mortgage could be determined.
