In anticipation of formal action, the following houses were
demolished, and the sites cleared, viz.:—
225, 227, 229, 231, 233 and 235 Lower Road.
4 and 5 Oxford Terrace.

E(12)d. Housing Act 1936.—Overcrowding.

E(12)e. Rent and Mortgage Interest (Restrictions)
Act 1939.
The provisions of this Act which came into force in
September, 1939, are administered by the Senior Sanitary
Inspector. The maximum permissible rent of houses brought
under control by the Act is the rent payable at 2nd September,
1939, subject to certain permitted increases which are provided
for by the Act. There is however no provision allowing for
decontrol on vacant possession.
During the year many cases have been dealt with by the
Senior Sanitary Inspector, improvements being effected as
follows:—
(a) Rent reduced from 18/- to 17/-
(b) Rent reduced from 12/6 to 10/-
(c) Rent reduced from 16/- to 15/3 and surcharge of
£4 0s. 6d. to tenant.
(d) Rent reduced from £1 1s. Od. to 18/- and surcharge
of £ll 8s. Od. to tenant.
(e) Rent reduced from 16/6 to 10/10 and surcharge of
17/- to tenant.
