C (4). DIPHTHERIA IMMUNISATION.

The Scheme for the Immunisation of children against Diphtheria was continued with throughout the year, and the following table will indicate the number of cases dealt with :

C(5). Comments on :—
(a) Diphtheria.
Anti-toxin is always available as provided by the Antitoxin
Order, 1915, and the Council's Medical Officers are always
willing to give a second opinion on doubtful cases.
There was no special incidence in any school.
(b) Scarlet Fever.
There were 231 cases of Scarlet Fever, as compared with
150 for the previous year, notified during the year. The
incidence of these cases was fairly uniformly spread throughout
the year; the weekly totals maintaining a fairly constant level
which was higher than the previous year but not a greatly
increased number over a short period.
Of the 231 cases notified 184 were admitted to hospital
for treatment.
(c) Enteric Fever.
There were two cases under this heading during the year
notified as Paratyphoid B.
(d) Puerperal Pyrexia.
Six cases of Puerperal Pyrexia were notified during the
year.
Arrangements have been made to secure admission of these
patients either to Queen Charlotte's Annexe or to the North
Western Hospital, which is controlled by the London County
Council, except when the patient's own practitioner arranges
for treatment elsewhere.
Under the Public Health (Puerperal Pyrexia) Regulations
1939, a Consulting Obstetrician, Mr. A. Galletly, is available
for assistance to Medical Practitioners within the area.
(e) Ophthalmia Neonatorum.
One case of Ophthalmia Neonatorum was notified, and was
treated at Hospital. There was no impairment of vision as a
sequel.
