E(3). Trade Refuse.
Trade Refuse is collected from the shops by arrangement
with the shopkeepers, an agreed charge being made, or it is
brought to the wharf by the traders themselves.
The growth of this section of the refuse disposal services
has been rapid, when it is remembered that 8 years ago approx.
116 tons were disposed of while in 1938 the amount reached
approx. 383 tons.
E (4). Water Supply.
The water in this district is almost exclusively supplied by
the Metropolitan Water Board. The water, though possessing
a considerable degree of hardness, is of good quality and is
palatable. The supply in nearly all cases is led into the houses :
standpipes exist on a few premises only.
Routine examinations of such supplies have been undertaken
throughout the year with completely satisfactory results,
and arrangements are in existence with the Kent County Laboratory
for 2 samples of this supply to be taken monthly for
bacteriological examination from various points in the district.
On 5th March, public water supply was laid on to the
encampment at Belvedere Marshes, and a water meter reading
of this supply recorded that 41,700 galls, were consumed during
a period of 9 weeks, this amount being indicative of .89 gallons
per person per day.
