A(8). Unemployment Figures and Comments.
With the courteous co-operation of the Manager of the
Erith Employment Exchange, it once again is possible to give
definite figures on the state of unemployment in the District,
as shown in the following table. A perusal of this table shows
that an increase in unemployment has occurred mainly in the
adult groups.
Whilst these figures are rather disconcerting, I am informed
that there was a constant increase in unemployment through
out the year.
Although there has been no slackening in building operations
in Erith itself, the easing of all building operations in
the adjoining areas, has affected us, owing to people living here
being employed outside the Borough.

With regard to the unemployment figures for the female group, the increase can be explained, I am advised, by the reduction of staff at a local factory employing a large proportion of female labour.

SECTION B.—MATERNITY AND CHILD
WELFARE SERVICES.
B(l). Maternity and Child Welfare Scheme.
The Maternity and Child Welfare Scheme provides the
following services :
1. Ante-natal clinic—one session per week at Hainault.
one session per week at Bedonwell.
2. Provision of an Obstetric Consultant for difficulties and
emergencies arising during pregnancy and labour.
