(b) Houses erected since the time of the first Survey.
At the meeting of the Health & Buildings Committee held
during August, 1987, a request was made for particulars regarding
progress and present position of work being carried out
under the Housing Act, 1936.
A special report was submitted in accordance with this
request and following that report a survey of the premises
erected since the time of the first Survey was undertaken, and
is continuing month by month.
(i) A comprehensive index of all properties erected since
the time of the first survey was compiled from records
obtained in co-operation with the Surveyor's Department
;
(ii) A detailed form was sent to the occupier of each
premises, together with an explanatory letter, requesting
that such form should be filled in and
returned within seven days;
(iii) From the replies received, a detailed Register has
been compiled, which shows not only the type of
house concerned but also the owners name and
address, the number of occupants, the equivalent
number, the 'permitted number' and whether or
not the premises are overcrowded.
The total number of premises concerned up to 31st December,
1937, was 1,451, and of this number—
(a) 1,235 were found to be owned by the occupier,
(b) 141 were tenanted; and of the remainder,
(c) 4 were occupied by virtue of the service of the occupier
to the owner,
(d) 63 were unoccupied at the time of visit; whilst
(e) 8 were being used as showhouses.
(i). Owner/Occupied Premises.
Of the owner/occupied premises, one proved to be overcrowded,
and, whilst the majority of forms were returned within
the specified time given—seven days—in the remainder of this
group, "reminder letters" or personal calls were necessitated
on one or more occasions in the cases of non-return of forms.
(ii). Tenanted Premises.
In each of the cases that were found to be tenanted, the
Temporary Housing Clerk was instructed to make a personal
call, and complete a Housing Form 'B.'
In addition to the facts so obtained being recorded in the
Register, an explanatory letter and an Official Certificate showing
the number constituting the 'permitted number' in relation
to each of these premises, has been sent to the Owner of such
premises.
