In every case where a birth is registered and has not been
notified the responsible person is requested to furnish an
explanation. All stillbirths and deaths of children under the
age of five years are investigated by the Health Visitors.
B(3). Child Welfare Centres.
The basis of child welfare facilities in the Erith Urban
District is a system of 3 clinics held 011 one half-day a week,
and one clinic held 011 one half-day a fortnight, in various parts
of the town.
Each Infant Welfare Clinic is attended by a MedicalOfficer,
two Health Visitors, and one clerk. The Health Visitors weigh
each child who attends, advise mothers in certain cases and
refer others to the Medical Officer for consultation, as shown in
the Table on page 21.
The work of the infant welfare centre is for the most part
Educational and advisory, and any ailments of a serious nature
are referred to the private medical practitioner, or to a hospital,
for treatment.
Dried milks are supplied to the mothers, on the advice of
the Medical Officer, as a rule at cost price, but where the family
income falls below a stated figure, milk may be provided either
at half cost or free.
