In parts of the Area, new estates of the residential suburban
type, have been growing up in the past few years, with a socalled
"dormitory population."
A(8). Unemployment Figures and Comments.
With the courteous co-operation of the Manager of the
Erith Employment Exchange, it once again is possible to give
definite figures on the state of unemployment in the District,
as shown in the following table. A perusal of this table shows
that an increase in employment has occurred mainly in the adult
male group, though not to such an extent as during 1936.
It should be again pointed out that it is most desirable
that any reduction in unemployment should be from the
adult male group. It has happened, that new industrial
undertakings come into a District, and take on a large number
of young persons between the ages of 16 to 18 years, thus
reducing the total unemployment figures, but not affecting the
adult males, which, from the social point of view, is the most
important group.

The following table shows, in figures, this reduction as against the figures for 1934, 1935 and 1936 : —

A(9). Riverside Promenade.
As indicated in my last report, the Council acquired a site
on the river frontage, and this has now been completed as a
Riverside Promenade, enabling an excellent view to be obtained
of this most interesting stretch of river.
H(4). BEDONWELL CLINIC.
The new All-Purpose Clinic at Bedonwell was completed,
and sessions of Infant Welfare, School, Ante-natal, Dental,
Remedial Exercises and Orthopaedic Clinics, commenced there
during the year,
