A(2). Population.
From a perusal of the statistics in the foregoing pages, the
figure which once again calls for a comment is that of the
population. From these statistics, also, it will he observed
that during 1937, 872 houses were erected.
It is rather interesting to reflect that these two figures
have a definite hearing one on the other, for now that new
houses are being erected at a constant rate of some 70 per
month, the influx of population to the new estates is and will
continue to grow in much the same way.
A(3). Births.
During 1937, the number of births under the Notification
of Births Act, was 605. Twenty stillbirths were also registered,
giving a stillbirth rate of 33.57 per 1,000 total births.
The live birth rate presents another most interesting
feature, inasmuch as that, it has a definite bearing on the
paragraph referring to population. Upon reflection it does
appear that now this newly-populated district is settling down,
the number of births are increasing in a like ratio to the inward
trend of population.
A(4). Deaths.
The total number of deaths was 415, 249 being males and
166 females. This is after allowing for inward and outward
transfers. The Death Rate for 1937 is 10.852. The largest
number of deaths attributed to one cause was due to Heart
Disease, accounting for 107. The next most common cause
was cancer accounting for 53. These figures closely follow
figures recorded in previous years and they present no unusual
features.
A(5). Maternal Mortality.
One death was recorded in Erith during 1937, under this
heading.
