Deaths.
There were 285 deaths registered in the district, a decrease of 41 as compared
with the previous year. This gives a death rate of 9"59 per 1000. If we deduct
from these four deaths of non residents who died in public Institutions in the
district, 13 accidents, and 9 suicides, the number of deaths would be 259, which
would give a death rate of 8.72.
The death rate is the lowest for the past ten years, the average for that period
being 1330
Two of the deaths registered were not certified by medical men.
Infantile Mortality.
The number of deaths of children under one year of age was 80, and between
one year and five years, 38, as compared with totals of 121 and 36 during the
previous year.
The death rate of children under one year of age per 1000 births is 88.8, the
average for the previous ten years being 132.65.
The number of children under one year of age who died from diarrhœa in
1904 was 33, in 1905, 9.
A new table (Table V.) has been issued by the Local Government Board for
this year which shows the Deaths from stated causes in weeks and months under
one year of age. This will be found at the end of the report, and shows that the
most fatal diseases were Diarrhœa, Pneumonia, and Convulsions. The largest
number of deaths due to any one cause was 15 due to Premature birth, and these
cases all died during the first three weeks of life, 12 of them dying before they
were a week old. Thirty deaths took place before the age of four weeks.
