INFANT MORTALITY
Of the 53 infants who died before attaining the age of one
year, 31 died within the first week of life. In 6 cases death was
due to Pneumonia, in 11 to Congenital malformation, in 9 to
Premature Birth and 7 to Injury at Birth.
On page 31 appears Table II wihch gives the ages and cause
of death of all children under the age of one year.
PUERPERAL PYREXIA
During the year 25 cases of Puerperal Pyrexia were notified.
MATERNAL MORTALITY
There was 1 maternal death during the year.
All cases of deaths arising in connection with pregnancy or
child-birth are investigated and a private and confidential report
thereon transmitted to the Ministry of Health.
SUPERVISION OF NURSING HOMES
There are two registered Nursing Homes in the District, both
of which are kept under regular supervision. The conduct of these
Homes has been satisfactory.

ADMINISTRATION OF MIDWIVES ACTS, 1902-36
At the end of the year 1948 there were 29 Midwives practising
in the district, 17 of whom were employed by the Council as wholetime
domiciliary midwives, and 12 employed in private Maternity
Homes and Hospital.

The reduced Birth-rate and greater Maternity Hospital facilities
are reflected in the considerable reduction in the number of
confinements attended by Municipal Domiciliary Midwives.
