On page 10 of this report full details of deaths of infants under
the age of one year will be found, and a further reference on the
subject will be found under the heading Zymotic Death-rate on
page 34.
BIRTHS.
The actual number of births registered in the District was as
follows:—
Boys. Girls. Total.
435 461 896
including 22 illegitimate births, i.e., 2.45 per cent. of the total.
In addition, 15 male (including 1 illegitimate) and 17 female stillbirths
were registered.
The corrected birth-rates for both sexes, live and still-births, which takes into consideration those born outside the District and those in the District not rightly recorded to the District, and also the corrected birth-rates for the last 5 years, are:—
Year. | Boys. | Girls. | Total. | Birth-rate per 1,000 Population. | Illegitimate Birth-rate per 1,000 Population. |

1932 | 571 | 527 | 1,098 | 15.69 | .62 |
1933 | 537 | 520 | 1,057 | 14.72 | .50 |
1934 | 571 | 555 | 1,126 | 15.08 | .44 |

INFANTILE DEATHS.
Reference to Table 2 on page 10 of this Report shews that of
the 61 deaths of children under 1 year of age 24 occurred during the
first week of life, 7 during the second week, 7 during the third week
and 1 during the fourth week. In other words, 39 of the 61 deaths
occurred before the children were one month old.
This is a very serious percentage, and needs careful consideration.
