During the course of the year the Middlesex County Council
determined to put into operation a scheme for the treatment of
children attending secondary schools who were suffering from
either dental defects or defective vision. Arrangements were made
whereby such treatment should be carried out through the staff
of the school medical service of the district in which the school was
situated. This scheme will come into operation during 1935. The
figures that I have quoted in the above table show how very necessary
it was that such treatment should be provided. Twenty-five
per cent. of the children examined were found to be suffering from
dental caries, whilst 12 per cent. required treatment for defective
vision. I welcome the decision of the County Education Committee,
and look forward to a considerable improvement in the
health of the Enfield children attending secondary schools as a
result thereof. My only regret is that the scheme was not made
comprehensive to include treatment for conditions of the throat
and nose and minor ailments.
