From these particulars it will be seen that we have inspected
an increased number of dwellings during 1913, the figures being
1,240 in 1913, as against 1,136 in 1912.
The great majority of the defects found to exist were remedied
before the end of the year, and the few remaining are having attention.
This result, I am pleased to say, has again been obtained
without resource to legal proceedings during the year.
The number of visits made in reference to children excluded
from Elementary Schools during the year was 856, and the total
number of inspections and visits for all purposes made by the staff
of the Sanitary Department was 21,351. shewing an increase of
2,137 over the number for 1912.
REMOVAL OF HOUSE REFUSE.
The removal of house refuse has received very close attention
in order to secure the collection and clearing of all refuse from
houses and premises regularly each week. 7,685 loads were collected,
an increase of 456 over the number collected in 1912.
The greater portion of this refuse was taken to the Council's
shoots, and the remainder to a brickfield.
FACTORY AND WORKSHOPS ACTS, 1901 and 1907.
A register of all workshops is kept, and at the end of 1913 there
were 115 workshops. 12 laundries, and 44 bakehouses registered.

The following tables give details of the work done in connection with these places, as required by the Home Office.
