Under the Government's Evacuation Scheme expectant mothers were
also given the opportunity of leaving th Edmonton, area, and a large
number of women availed themselves of this arrangement. Mothers from the
eighth month of pregnancy ware sent in the care of the Council's Municipal
Midwives, and two of the midwives remained in the areas, namely Ongar and
Bedford until November, when they returned to their normal duties. The
Evacuation Scheme continues in operation but mothers car. now be sent away
at the eighth month of pregnancy only.
At the request of the Ministry of Health arrangements are being
made for the Bay Nursery premises in Fore Street to be equipped as a
Refuge for young children who become separated from their parents or
guardians after air raids, and the Health Visiting Staff are to assist with
this work, under the direction of the Lady Superintendent;.
The under-mentioned information will give some small indication
only of the work carried out by the Department during the year 1939:-

The total number of births notified during 1939 was as follows:Live

These figures include births which have taken place in the North Middlesex
County Hospital, both of Edmonton and Non-Edmonton residents; excluding these
latter the notified births of Edmonton residents are:--
